Speaker: Paul Quintavalla, from Iron Marketing, a food broker for the Dept. of the Army, spoke to us about Rotaplast…what Rotary does worldwide to repair cleft lips and cleft palates of children in third world counties, such as Guatemala, where he recently assisted. Paul spent about a half hour telling us all about the origin of these maladies…80% genetic and the remainder caused by poor diet. Paul was so very specific, clear and informative that this author thought he was a member of a medical team. He also noted that pregnant mothers in these countries suffer from inadequate Folic Acid levels which could contribute to such defects, which is common in Asia, Africa and parts of South America. Of a group of 250 children in Guatemala, only 139 were operated upon, as the others had other ailments preventing them from having surgery. Surgery is done by teams of oral/maxillofacial surgeons, nurses, assistants and volunteers. Paul also said that if a child is operated on within the first 18 months of life, it is much easier to completely restore cleft lips and palates, but however, if waited longer, it is almost impossible to do a proper, complete cleft palate repair. Insufficient or no repair can lead to malformation of the child because food and nutrients are diverted out of the normal digestive path, and that infection and health issues can occur for similar reasons. This was a very interesting and informative talk. In appreciation, Bill S. gave a generous gift of $20.00. For more information about this project, please go to www.rotaplast7450.org, or contact Paul at iconfirst@aol.com or at 610-356-4050. Please note that 95% of all money donated toward Rotaplast goes directly toward programs.
50/50 of $25 went to Gloria Bohinski, who so generously donated it to Rotaplast. Thank you, Gloria, from all of us!
Meeting ended at 1:XX PM
