Meeting News...
COGS 8/8/13
OK people, I am a bad person.  I didn’t get the Cogs written last week, so most of you didn’t have any intellectual and challenging reading.  It is frightening to think that you rely on me for the sophisticated and witty pleasure of your week.

Just a note, NO, I said NO, meeting at the Molly on Thursday next week.  I hope somebody told them not to expect us.  Instead, we will be at the Track for our annual picnic on Friday.  Gentlemen are required to wear jackets and ladies are required to wear clothes.  It starts around noon if I am not mistaken.  If you haven’t signed up to attend, please let Harry know.

Guests were Stephen McGahran, invited by Mike DeNofa, and our old friend, Ward DeGroot who returned thanks for us.  I should mention that our illustrious leader, Prez Bill was not with us, and the Prez Jr., Denise took over and ran the meeting.  Aside from starting late, she did OK.  Not great, but OK for a beginner.

The Molly served us lobster bisque, which is normally one of my favorites, but Thursday, it just wasn’t that good.  The grilled chicken on the Cesar Salad was great, however, and dessert was some sort of berry/peach cobbler.  At least that is what it tasted like, and it was pretty good.

Birthdays included Tom M., and he protested that he was fined last week.  You can imagine how far that got him.  We celebrated Walter and Connie’s anniversary, and Mike D. and Gail’s.  As usual, we sang.

The fines included contributions from Dave F, Tom M, Mike T,
Gloria and naturally, yours truly.  I haven’t made one week  without reaching into my pocket to pay Jim.  Am I glad he came back for a second year as Sgt.-of-Arms.

We had the normal Happy $$$ except that Warren had another grandchild, the second one of the month, but this time a little Girl.  Warren made another nice donation to our Foundation.  Thanks Warren, have many more grandchildren.

Suzanne Stingo was our speaker for the meeting, and she talked to us about the various types of social media.  Her main discussion was about Facebook and LinkedIn, and she attempted to distinguish the benefits of each of those programs.

For anyone in the audience that knows and uses these tools, it was probably a good program, and she presented it well.  I admit, I didn’t understand  most of what she was telling us, and that makes it difficult for me to relay it to you.  How about in the future we get someone in to talk about the typewriter and the adding machine.

Three quick reminders, the District is having its picnic on Sunday, the 18th at the Oak Tree Lodge in Wall..  Put it on your calendars that the Foundation Dinner will be on November 1st, at the Clarion Hotel on Rt. 37 in Toms River.  That is normally a good program with a good speaker.  Also, the Vocational Assembly is on October 7th at the Pines Manor in Edison.  I have been assured by Harriet that they have good speakers including the President-Elect of RI.

Old Nick won the 50-50 and took home some $20.  TTFN.

How many of you remember Chuck Sidun’s year as President of RBR.  No, I didn’t think many of you would.  Chuck was known as the Phantom President and served during the 1997-1998 Rotary Year.  There is a danger of our current President, what’s his name, may also get that title.  Once again, Denise had to step in and steer the Red Bank Rotary ship away from the perilous rocks that await us.

The Molly treated us to Pork Milanese which, if truth be told, was pretty good.  Unusual, but good.  The key lime bread pudding left something to be desired, however.  There are some flavors that just don’t mix, and this was one of them.

Anyway, Denise did an adequate job ringing the bell and leading us in song.  Billy S. returned thanks and we 4-wayed.  Denise had to look over her shoulder for the third and fourth tests but at the rate she is going, she will have them all down by December.

Fining Jimmy was at his best again this week.  Chuck, Warren, Kevin, Tony, Rob, Harry, and Al, all donated to the good of the Club, as did I.  Boy, you give some people just a little power and they think they are important.  Notice I am saying this about Jim when I will be away for the next two weeks, and he won’t remember my comments by then.

Happy $$$$.  Warren started off by giving for his daughter’s 34th birthday.  Rob gave for a hero office worker in an elementary school who helped avoid a disaster.  Old Lou gave for new grandchildren who happened to be twins.  Congratulations Lou.  Barbara N. gave for missing three weeks while she was away, and Addie gave for the great job Harry did planning the picnic.  Harriet gave $2 for taking the next two weeks off, and I did also.  We are both going to be in different parts of the great state of Florida.  Dr. Tony gave for the great Gift of Life dinner he attended, and Jim gave for his losing weight.  Ward, our perpetual guest Rotarian gave $5 for not being able to attend the picnic at the track.

Don summed up the Rotarians birthdays by stating that there were four birthdays, and none of the four people were present.  We did sing, however, for the birthdays of Gail DeNofa and Marie Mullevey.  I’m sure they would have enjoyed the singing as much as I did, if they had been present.

Our speaker for the meeting was a Rotarian from the Brick Club, Theresa Contor.  Theresa is a community Developer for LADACIN, which stands for Lifetime Assistance for Developmental and Challenging Individual Needs.  The organization evolved from the old Cerebral Palsy charity.  They broadened their scope to assist people with all types of developmental needs.  They serve some 3,000 individuals a year in their schools and work centers in Monmouth and Ocean Counties.  They operate five group homes each with full time staff, and run a county wide transportation system.

For my soap box comment of the week, we only had some 25 people at the meeting including our guest speaker.  Let’s encourage some of our missing Rotarian friends to make an effort to be at the meeting, including our President.

Walter Perry was the winner of our 50-50 and took home some $25.    TTFN

Todd works for the Boy Scouts.  He talked about the Rotary leadership program he is our district's RLA rep  He helps train leaders, it is very hands on program.  There are three levels of training.   He asked how would your life is impacted by Rotary.  What are some of the service projects we have done?  In trying to get people to want to attend, Red Bank Rotary pays for training.  Another way to get people to go training is to car pool.
