Special note: Warren thanked the entire club for selecting him as this year’s recipient of the coveted Paul Harris award , as he said, “…given by an extraordinary organization to an ordinary person…”, taking place at the Gift of Life Spring Fling Gala at Berlin, NJ. This was very special since RI President K. R. Ravindran made the presentation. Those also recognized for their service and as a bigger gift donor were Horton & Susan Hickerson, Harriet Primack, Addie Schmidt, Denise Benbrooke, and Chuck Watson. A wonderful night was had by the some 500 attendees.
Speaker: VP Ken selected one person from each table to talk about them self. Those selected were (1) Ken Scaggs, (2) Tom Gilmore (Asbury Park), (3) Joe Greca, and (4) Bill Saloukas. This was a very different and extremely interesting program, giving the speaker the ability to share with the rest of us some very wonderful and personal aspects of their life. It is this author’s hope that this program continues in the near future, and that every member may be given this opportunity to speak to the rest of the Club.
50/50 $30.00 went to Warren, who will donate it back to the club next week. Incidentally, no cigar for the biggie!
Meeting ended at 1:27 PM
When I was a boy of fourteen, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be twenty-one, I was astonished how much he learned in seven years.
Hey Guys a & Gals, Teddie is Back. What a pleasure to have her with us tickling the ivories. We are so lucky to be able to enjoy her music during lunch.
Well gang, not much has changed since I last wrote to you. We sang, pledged, Billy prayed, and we 4-wayed. Prez Mike has finally learned the 4-way test, and he doesn’t need to turn around to look at it anymore. Hope it doesn’t take Ken that long to learn, but having seen him at PETs, I’m not so sure.
The fare for the luncheon was salmon with rice and green beans and finished with a wonderful, but small piece of carrot cake. I thought the salmon was excellent but someone at our table who shall remain nameless, thought it was too dry. Just goes to show you that one woman’s trash is another man’s treasure.
Sgt. Jim was so happy that Teddie was back that he had her play ROTARY so we could sing. People, in all sincerity, this club should not sing anything. Bill D, our future DG couldn’t remember the words or the spelling.
The fines were judiciously awarded by Sgt. Jim to Eric A for being late, Liz for having her pin on backwards, Dr. Tony for no pin, and Dr. Joe for his cell phone. Somehow I think I heard that Al had to pay a fine for Mike T. As I get older, my ears don’t hear quite as fast as they used to.
OK, no one fessed up to a birthday or anniversary so we didn’t need to sing. What a relief.
Happy $$$$. Addie, Harriet, Chuck, and Mike D all gave money for Teddie being back. Teddie even chipped in $5 for being back. I think our Prez gave money for Seton Hall and basketball, Bill D. gave for various items, and Addie gave another buck for Bill D’s great AG session at PETs. Mike T. then startled the club by giving a check to the RB Foundation for 52 wonderful years in Rotary. You should have seen the moths come out of his wallet.
Upcoming Events: Lombardi Dinner, tonight, (you missed it), Rumson’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade, this Sunday, Foundation Dinner on March 21st in Berlin, NJ, Gift of Life dinner on April 9th, and on April 18th is our Food and Wine Tasting Event. By the way, Steve could use some more vendors. The District conference is on April 29th and 30th and May 1st in Baltimore. Career Day is May 5th, and Addie needs volunteers to take some kids.
Our Speaker for the day was John Ward, owner, publisher and reporter for “Red Bank Green”. For those of you that don’t know, “Red Bank Green” is an on-line newspaper devoted strictly to Red Bank. John talked to us about the changing dynamics in advertising for the small business. The one point he stressed to us was “Don’t be Passive about your advertising”. From the questions, I think the program was well received.
Dr. Joe was the big 50-50 winner and pocketed $20. TTFN.
In January 1983, thirty five people gathered at the Friends Meeting House in Shrewsbury to discuss the issue of hunger in Monmouth County. They committed themselves to help the community members who find it difficult to provide the bare necessities for their families.
Galvanized into action, the group (in which churches and businesses were represented) began to raise funds and recruit volunteers.
In March 1983, Reverend Terence Rosheuvel provided the basement of the Saint Thomas Episcopal Church in Red Bank to serve hot lunches. In 1985, Lunch Break moved to the Masonic Temple on Bergen Place and expanded its services to include the provision of groceries to families.
Community demand quickly increased beyond the capacity of the Temple, and Lunch Break leaders began to investigate the construction of a permanent, independent facility. In 1986, through combined efforts of many contributors and a large grant from the State of New Jersey, Lunch Break opened the doors to its current facility at 121 Drs. James Parker Boulevard in Red Bank.
In 1992 Saint Leo’s started supplying bagged lunches on Saturday to be distributed to our clients.
For 25 years Mrs. Norma Todd was the Executive Director and the heart and soul of Lunch Break. Mrs. Todd passed away in April 2008 leaving a legacy of love and determination as her banner. Shortly thereafter, Gwendolyn Love was hired as our new Executive Director. Along with her staff, Lunch Break annually is helped by over 1,500 volunteers, with approximately 70 volunteers serving in several capacities on a regular basis.
We continue to serve our community members in need to this day, with the same passion, dedication and community support which is the foundation established by Mrs. Todd years ago.
In recent years, several programs have been added to the Lunch Break roster of services such as the children's Cooking Class Program and the Saturday breakfast, which is sponsored by several area churches.
Our vision is to lead the region as the comprehensive food, nutrition and life skills resource for community members in need.
Lunch Break freely provides life’s basic necessities – food, clothing and fellowship for our community members in need. Our mission is to alleviate hunger and lead those we serve to self-sufficiency and healthier lifestyles. We serve everyone, with compassion and dignity.

Rotaplast-PowerPoint
Paul gave presentation on Rotaplast last year and is here to give us updates.
Twenty years ago Rotaplas founded by a plastic surgeon. The idea was to repair cleft lips and palate, a common birth defect. It is believed to be a hereditary birth due to the lack of folic acid. It happens more often in boys then girls. Rotary helps with missions which includes volunteer medical staff, supplies etc. The average mission lasts 15 days. Rotaplast averages 100 surgical procedures per week. The last mission was to India in Faridabad. Paul showed the poverty and team in a power-point presentation. He discussed how the mission proceeded from bringing supplies in, to how the surgery is done. Great job Paul!
