Boy it has been a long time since I have written the COGs. The last one was sometime in April. In any case, I am back filling in for the worthy Warren, and I bet you haven’t even missed me.
The ever lovely Teddie tickled the ivories and entertained us with renditions from the Broadway shows, Phantom and Les Mis. We are the only Club in the District that has entertainment with our meetings and what wonderful entertainment it is.
The chicken francaise was excellent, and was only exceeded by the “Triple Chocolate Layer Cake” which, I am sure, was especially enjoyed by Barbara. I’m more of a carrot cake man myself.
Tommy brought his better half, Donnalyn, with him for the luncheon, and it’s always a pleasure to have her with us. State Senator Beck’s legislative director, Morganne Firmstone also joined us.
We celebrated a number of anniversaries at the meeting, and I hope I got these right. Jack and Caroline, Donnalyn and Tom, and Jon and Holly all were celebrating this week, and I think that Jim’s wife, Maria will be having a birthday on the 30th.
Now I know I am not going to get all the fines correct, however, the usual late suspects were fined, and some people were fined for just being here. As if we didn’t make enough money, Jim had the nerve to fine Sen. Beck and her assistant. Jim, that took guts. I wouldn’t look for my NJ tax refund any time soon if I were you Jim, but it took guts.
Forget happy dollars. Warren thinks and writes much faster than I do, and anyway, I am out of practice. I gave, Frank gave, Rhonda gave, Addie gave, and Rob gave, for what I am not sure. I did catch that Clark’s child lost his/her first tooth and that Joe’s wife won her golf flight at Deal CC. Lou parted with some money for his fifth great grandchild. Tommy gave for his 23rd anniversary. If you look at our web site, it says it is his 114 anniversary. Steve might want to check that.
OK, now of some announcements. Oct 6th is the golf outing at Deal. We need gift certificates and participants, and raffle tickets need to be sold. Oct 7th is the Vocational Assembly, and they have a great line up of speakers. It is at the Pine’s Manor in Edison. The RLI training is in Cherry Hill on Oct. 10th. There is another on Oct 11th in Montvale. If you haven’t attended and want to get more involved in Rotary get to one of these. The club picks up the tab. Nov 7th is the District Foundation Dinner and again, a great speaker.
Senator Beck was again with us, and she is a wonderful speaker. She represents the 11th legislative district and I believe that this is her second or third term representing us. She also served as a State Assemblyperson. She indicated that she had worked on the farm assessment reform bill which was passed I believe two years ago, which requires ACTIVE farming in order to continue to receive a reduction in taxes. Briefly she talked about the situation with Ft. Monmouth and also about Monmouth Park. She discussed the problems with the gambling industry in Atlantic City and also the loss of the horse parks in NJ. It was a good informative program.
Guess what, the 50-50 was won by none other than Teddie. She will be receiving $20 when she gets here next week.
Warren, hurry back. TTFN.

Speaker: Charles Fleischer III – spoke on Facing Challenges; Turning Tragedies into Opportunities. Charlie was thrown from a car going 100+ miles an hour and thrown 100’ into the air, landing with a broken neck, causing him to have spinal cord paralysis from the waist down. Charlie spoke very eloquently and told us that he got a BA degree from Rutgers and started his own business in addition to being a professional speaker-advocate for spinal cord injuries. He specializes in inspiring corporations, organizations and individuals to use their own challenges to create opportunities. Charlie has received four humanitarian awards between 2007-2013. He said that there are 4 things to do when turning difficulties into opportunities, viz.:
At the end, Charlie was comical, telling us that he saves money on shoes, doesn’t have to do laundry and doesn’t have to change dirty diapers. We all sat mesmerized at Charlie’s talk and we asked him to come back again and speak to us.
50/50 $20.00 went to Rob.
