Meeting News...
COGS 12/19/13
This is great, I go away for three weeks, come back, and Lou Bona is still winning the 50-50.  I am surprised that this man doesn’t invest in lottery tickets.  Really Lou, give someone else a chance.

Today, we had an insight into the future, and it wasn’t great.  That’s right folks, the very junior President-elect-elect, Rob, was our leader for the day.  Boy is there a lot of work to be done.  Rob is just not up to ringing a loud bell nor can he remember that we return thanks before the meeting.  Fortunately, Chuck stepped right up and prayed for us.  I am not sure, but I think Rob may have lip-synced the Four Way Test.  I am sure he will learn to do better.  We said these things about our current Prez, and now he is absolutely mediocre.

The lovely Donna Lynn, Mrs. Tommy Zapcic, joined us for the meeting and Rob brought a guest, John Kirkpatrick.  It was nice to see both of them and hope they return often.

How about that hanger steak?  I thought it was great, done very rare.  The meal was finished with a “bread pudding” that tasted, to me, more like Christmas pudding with ice-cream.  Not Bad.

Good old Jim clipped me, Frank, and Tony for an extra buck then fined everyone a dollar, just to finish off the year on a warm note.  Thanks Jim.

There were birthdays, but I completely missed them.  Not unusual for someone of my advanced age.

Many, many, happy dollars.  Addie, Joe G., Jon, Mike, Tony, Warren, and Harriet gave money for the musicians that joined us for the meeting.  Warren also gave money for debarking from his cruise this morning and making the meeting.  Chuck, Joe G. and Rob gave money for the great Holiday Party we had on Tuesday.  Those Rotarians that missed the party really missed a great evening of fun and fellowship.  Thanks Harriet for setting it up.  Don gave happy dollars for Rob being on time for only the second time in Rob’s Rotary career.  Donna Lynn and Tommy also gave happy dollars but again, I’m not fast enough to pick these things up and write them down.

The musical entertainment for the meeting was provided by the Ocean Grove Violin Academy and the Anjali Trio.  Holly Horn is the Director of the Academy and also played in the Trio.  Holly daughter was featured as the first violinist and Teddie’s granddaughter played with the Academy.  They all were very good. It was a lovely presentation of mostly classical works by Mozart, Bach, and Mendelssohn.  I know that a lot of the club didn’t know that the violin was played by anyone other than Charlie Daniels, so it was an uplifting cultural experience for most of our members.

As is our normal Holiday tradition, we presented our weight staff a token of our appreciation for all they do for us.  Money was given to Jill, Janice, and Paul as a thank you for their efforts.

Mike DeNofa indicated we are short of volunteers for Friday and Saturday bell ringing.  If you can spare an extra hour, give Mike a call and help out.

REMEMBER, NO MEETING NEXT WEEK.

Happy Holidays and a Great New Year

The topic: Terrorist Threat in the USA and Present Middle East Situation

We have had 6 terrorist attacks in the US in the last couple of years.  Tom recommended that everyone watch," Run, Hide, Fight" -a short film from Homeland Security on u tube.
He talked about the difference between Sunnis (mainly Saudi Arabia) and Shiites (rest of Moslem countries) and gave a brief history lesson on the region.
Tom listed countries that are helping terrorists.  He told us to keep an eye on Turkey because it is turning it's attention to the Arab states and is now purchasing arms from China. Egypt is also purchasing arms from Russia. Tom stated that Syria will survive, because the rebels fight amongst each other. A lot of Americans who fought there and will come back to the US skilled in the use of weapons.  The average Muslem is relatively poor with the rulers holding the wealth. Tom gave a list of terrorist weapons, such as dynamite and Sarin gas. Cites are doing mock terrorist drills, one was done last June in Tinton Falls. It was an interesting talk and gave us food for thought.

Milton Holmes is a former Tuskegee airman. He talked briefly about his experience. There were many tests to pas, only two men passed and they were from Lincoln Nebraska. The flying was easy the studying was hard. There were 86 men who participated. Milton left the service at the end of the war. He did not see a future in civil aviation. He went on to have a career with the US Postal Service. There is a great video with Milton discussing his experiences.
