Meeting News...
Bill  started off the meeting at 12:15 PM after hearing some spectacular show tunes played by our Teddy, including I’m Falling In Love With You, and Love Is A Many Splendid Thing.  I was baffled to hear that dear Teddy does not read music which means that she may just have either perfect or relative pitch, which is a G-d given rare gift to some people in terms of playing an instrument or knowing notes as they hear them.  Again, thank you so much for such a presentation.

Chuck…thanks for your thoughtful prayer asking for guidance for the new Board.

Food:
There was served a good-looking chicken Caesar salad which began with a salted tomato soup and finished with flan.  Even though there were a few who said the chicken was a bit dry, it appeared that almost everybody at my table finished their entire plate!

Guests:
I hope I got the spelling correct, but some handsome, well-dressed guy named Tom Zapcic visited our club.  I thought I remembered having seen him sometime long ago, but I just can’t remember where.

Fines:
Oh, boy…is this fellow Jim getting out of hand!  Each week we have to dig further into our monthly food budget to support his wishes.  Victims this week were Steve, Mike D. and Tom were late; Liz had forgotten her pin; our guest speaker, Ted Friedli for not wearing pants; the rest of us for not having shorts on; and those ladies in purple were lucky they didn’t pay as all other ladies did for NOT wearing purple; Warren for doing the COGS…and finally, Jim for not answering Warren’s email or phone call…which Warren paid.  Next week, Jim, I’m sure I’m going to be fined, so please bring your check book with you!

Happy Dollars:
Chuck for birth of granddaughter, Penelope Grace on May 25th; Liz for visiting her grandbaby; Denise for tonight’s joint board meeting; Ted for being our guest; Tom for running in the Spring Lake race; Bill, for Ted being here, for the Board meeting tonight and for just being at the meeting; Clark for just being fine.

Speaker:
Ted Friedli from Long Branch Rotary spoke on Travel Safety Measures.
  1. No evidence that booking online is less expensive.  See www.exceltravel.com for more information.
  2. Prices are based upon supply and demand; better prices offered off-season.  Traveling on Thursday-Sunday is most expensive time of week while Tuesday and Wednesday are least.
  3. Direct flights make stops while non-stops don’t.
  4. Whether you book with a travel agent or direct, the commission is the same, so why not book with a travel agent.
  5. See www.oyster.com for travel reviews that are reliable.  Also see www.tripadvisor.com for more reviews.
  6. Many hotels are NOT rated by guests but rather by certain amenities that they have
  7. There are hidden fees with airlines such as certain seats, luggage;  With hotels: resort fees, and with auto rental companies there are “recovery fees” which can add up to $50 per DAY!  Beware!
  8. Ask yourself “why” you want to take a certain trip and perhaps you can do it less expensively and better.
  9. River cruises are biggest trend in Ted’s 30 years and Viking is almost sold out is year.  They offer substantial discounts.
  10. Better to be on a newer ship on a “lesser” cruise line than an older ship on a “better” cruise line.
  11. Destination weddings are very popular nowadays.
  12. Why use travel agent? Because there is recourse, live phone contact with somebody you know; generally a local business, and a free “human search engine”.

50/50 of $20 went to Bill

Meeting ended at 1:35 PM

The President Bill promptly started the meeting at 12:15 PM

Chuck gave a brief appropriate prayer and asked for the promise of spring, summer and hot weather, which was totally befitting at this time.

Food:
A delicious dinner consisted of mixed salad greens, European breast of chicken in Marsala sauce, chocolate molten lava cake, with coffee and tea.  By the looks of the plates on my table, I would say that everybody enjoyed his/her meal.

Music:
Teddy serenades us with a medley of beautiful patriotic tunes, including Yankee Doodle Dandy; You’re a Grand Old Flag; Pack Up Your Troubles in Your Old Kit Bag; The Caissons Go Rolling Along, and a few others.  Thanks, Teddy for giving us a beautiful start for the holidays.

Guests:
Russell Anderson of the Tinton Falls Rotary Club was both a guest and our speaker, representing the Center for Vocational Rehabilitation.

Bill Donnelly told us his “Johnny Joke”, which was about Johnny kicking all the animals…but it was the cat that got us all to laugh about!

Harry told us another joke that I didn’t have enough time to record; my apologies, Harry…I’m sure I’ll be fined for this by Jim next week.

Fines:
Please note that at the beginning of each meeting Jim walk around and looks at each of us to find at least something to fine us with….so…here goes:  Harry & Frank for being late; the following had no pins: Mike, Liz and Tony; no badges were Walter, but Joe & Warren were instructed by Jim to pay for Walter; Rhoda for a lovely article about her in Hot Red Bank; Frank for a 1979 picture for it which was said that Frank was taking money from children; Addie for not knowing the difference between the Oyster Point and Molly Pitcher last week; Chuck fined Jim for a blank picture and not wearing a Rotary pin on his Linkedin ad.

Speaker:
1) Russell Anderson from the Center for Vocational Rehabilitation spoke on behalf of the Lombardi Awards Dinner, which is held the 3rd week of March each year.  The CVR administers and does fund-raising for the Lombardi Dinner and all of which goes back to Rotary.  He thanked all Rotarians who helped out, including Bill Donnelly and Paul Zarella, and presented our club with a check for $1069 for which we were extremely appreciative.  Thank you, Russell!

2) Harriet (in a pinch to pick up for a last minutes cancelation) gratefully showed a video of a past National District Governors Assembly, where Richard King, a past RI president, spoke so eloquently.  He talked about the uncommon people and said that Rotary now needs more of the uncommon leadership, which are leaders who influence others to move forward; to do things out of the ordinary; to be visionaries, setting examples, and being motivating force of people under one’s direction.  He spoke about the 20 characteristics of uncommon leaders, some of which are:
  1. Conviction
  2. Vision – which involve a goal, a business plan, implementation of the plan, and recognition of Rotarians who implement the plan
  3. Commitment
He then went on to give reasons why one should join Rotary, viz.:
  1. Friendship
  2. Business development
  3. Personal growth development
  4. Business leadership
  5. Fun
  6. Continuation
  7. Public speaking skills
  8. Traveling assistance
  9. Entertainment
  10. To serve others

50/50 of $25.00 went to Harry

Meeting ended at 1:32 PM

The President Bill started off the meeting at 12:25 PM after most of us found out when going to the Molly that the meeting was, in fact, being held again at the Oyster Point again this week.

Chuck Watson said a prayer which included praise for Rotary being such a wonderful organization and for all the good things it does.

Food:  We were served a delicious meal of Caesar’s salad, lemon chicken with mashed potatoes, carrots and asparagus, to be finished by apple crisp compote and the usual coffee-tea combo.

Guests:  There were no guests this week since this was a scheduled business meeting.

Fines: Sargeant Jim was really on a roll this week.  He fined Bill Donnelly, Denise and all the directors and officers $1.00 for not telling us that the meeting today was at the O.P.  Gail also fine $1.00 for texting and Lydia and Addie for wearing pink!  A surprising one…it cost Rob a fine for being on time! Mike paid up for being late and yours truly, for not wearing a tie.  Steve had no pin, so that was $1.00, and Chuck for sending a post card when traveling. We all appreciate the clever and thoughtfulness of Jim who has given this club a guaranteed set of laughs every week.  Keep up the great work, Jim.

Tim Hogan spoke on Health Care Reform.  Riverview is  focusing on: Oncology-cyber knife, women's Service, Surgery, and Out Patients Services. Riverview will invest 25 million in oncology services to compete with Sloan Kettering (they moving to Middletown). They have helped almost 30,000 woman. Riverview has changed their model to having female physicians available for women's services. They now  have 11 operating rooms and added 2 oversized operating rooms so they can install oversize equipment. A DiVinci robot has been installed to use during  surgical procedures. The Hospital sees close to 40,000 patients in the ER.  Riverview is NJ's only fully integrated health Care Delivery system. They are  well positioned for the New Paradigm of Health Care, which is working on clinical experience for patients.  The future of health care is  risk proposition,  if you don't follow the rules you will pay more.  You need to stay healthy.  Your physician will receive an incentive to keep you healthy and to keep you out of the hospital.  Tim answered questions after speaking, but I think there are a lot more unanswered questions in the future.

50/50
Addie

The Prez started off the meeting with the normal fanfare and Chuck returned thanks for us.

Here we are starting a new month, and the Molly served us sausage, peppers and onions. Actually, it was pretty good, so I will say no more about the meal. Actually I will; the cakes in the strawberry shortcakes were rather hard. I only mention that because if I didn’t complain about something, you would think an imposter was writing the Cogs.

We had two guests joining us from the 1st Constitution Bank. Clark brought them, and they were Andrea Pagiazitis and Cheri Jugan. We hope that they will return and visit with us again.

The fines for the day were numerous, as usual. Doc didn’t have his pin on, and Rob and Gail were late. Just as Jim was going around fining people, Kevin and Steve were sitting at the table texting. That cost them. Sgt. Jim then told us all about the dream he had about Rotary and fined everyone that was in his dream. During happy dollars, Gail got up with a sad dollar indicating that if Jim had dreams about Rotary, he needed to get a life. That is true, Jim.

Chuck is having a birthday this next week and since I will be away for mine, I got clipped also. It is hard to believe, but Barb and Bill are celebrating their anniversary. Sometimes it’s hard to tell if Barb is celebrating or commiserating about her anniversary.

A number of people gave happy dollars for the Food and Wine that the Prez chaired. Those contributing included Liz. Rob, Bill, and Harriet. A couple of people gave for the Rangers making it to the next round of the hockey playoffs. Chuck gave for our speaker, Toni Malone, and Mike gave and thanked the club for his Rotary watch. Barb gave for her annually renewable Cinco de Mayo contract she has with Bill, and I gave because I won’t see you people for the next two months.

Our calendar is getting full. This weekend is the District Conference and May 17th is the District Assembly. That is at Burlington Community College. The club will give out its scholarships on June 5th, and on June 12th, our Foundation gives out its grants. July 11th is Harriet’s installation at Eagle Ridge Country Club in Lakewood. July 21st is the Golf Outing and on August 15th is the picnic at the track.

Our Speaker for the day was Antonia (Toni) Malone, a Rotarian form the Tinton Falls Club. Toni is a retired professor of Religious Studies at Seaton Hall University. She talked to us about her church’s work in Haiti and the various programs that they have set up there. For a number of years they have run a successful microcredit program, and they have set up other loan programs to give the people the ability to own donkeys, goats, and oxen.

Her church, St. Joseph’s in Keyport, has also started and run a medical clinic for those in need, and they pay the salaries of the entire medical staff of the clinic. In additional, they have set up scholarship programs and are sending young men and women to medical school so that they can come back and serve in their community. Red Bank’s Foundation has given grants to this program. Toni and her church are making a difference in the poorest country in our hemisphere by helping people learn to help themselves. The 50-50 or 25-75, whatever you call it, was won by Doctor Tony. It was large enough for him to recover his lunch money.

I want each and every one of you to know how much I am really going to miss you over the next six to eight weeks. Every day on the golf course I will be wishing that I was back here at the Molly getting fined by Jim. It is a hard life that I live, but then, someone has to do it. TTFN.
