Speakers: Laurie Landy and Susie Rehr – Special Strides in Monroe, NJ – making a difference in people’s lives through horses. Laurie and Susie started this business in 1998. This was a particularly interesting talk illustrating how certain children with certain disabilities and special needs are often able to overcome them with equine therapy, adaptive horseback riding, therapeutic carriage driving, experiential learning and equine facilitated learning, using their specialty in occupational therapy, physical therapy, and are both certified in hippotherapy. The therapies develop motor skills, muscle tone, balance, posture, coordination, strength and body awareness, in addition to motivation for speech and communication, skill acquisition, self-confidence, and self-awareness. There is also improvement in overall physical, cognitive, social and emotional well-being. Sessions are $140 and there is help for those not able to pay fees. Consideration to having a fundraiser was mentioned. Finally, we saw a compelling video that touched the hearts of everybody.
