Speaker: Jon Miller, NOTA – The Network Of Tyrosinemia Advocates (NOTA)
Today we learned of a disease that has only affected approximately 320 people in the world, of which Jon spoke about. His 6 year-old son was born with it, which is deadly if not given the medicine manufacture red by a Swedish pharmaceutical, which costs hundreds of thousands of dollars, whereby the pharmaceutical gives financial assistance to most victims since almost all of the population cannot afford to pay the retail price for this drug…which is not covered by traditional health insurance. The disease affects the liver and normally when we eat proteins, they benefit us, make us grow, keep us healthy and are digested by the body. In the case where one has tyrosinemia, proteins form a poison in the body which obviously can be lethal, so the patient has a diet without any proteins and eats lots of vegetables, supplements and takes the wonder drug.
Jon formed NOTA several years ago, which is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization. Previously there were no support groups, no information, and nobody with which to confer. NOTA makes it possible for every child in the world to get treatment. He also got legislation for newborns to be tested for tyrosinemia, as they do for many other diseases and genetic disorders. Jon goes around speaking to groups to create public awareness. He did a fabulous job talking to our group and at the end I suggested to him to return on an annual bases to address this and other groups in the area. His contact information is 609-713-9609, or jon@fieroservice.com. You can also go to their website at www.notacares.org.
