Speaker:   Dorothea Hurley, JBJ Soul Kitchen, Red Bank
The JBJ Soul Kitchen seeks to provide healthy, organic and locally grown food in a restaurant setting.  We empower individuals by providing volunteer opportunities in exchange for a dining certificate for themselves and their family and by providing job training in the food industry. We allow our paying customers to effect change in their community by paying it forward to cover the cost of volunteering customers. We promise to treat all our customers with dignity and respect, while uniting communities and forming healthy and lasting relationships through food.
All are welcome at our table.
At the JBJ Soul Kitchen, a place is ready for you if you are hungry, or if you hunger to make a difference in your community. For we believe that a healthy meal can feed the soul.
Happy are the hands that feed.
Those who volunteer are guided by Soul Kitchen staff through their tasks. Volunteering at Soul Kitchen can lead to qualifying for job training.
When there is love, there is plenty.
As you will see, our menu has no prices. You select what you like and make the minimum donation. If you can afford to donate more you are helping to feed your neighbor. If you are unable to donate, an hour of volunteering pays for your meal.
Good company whets the appetite.
At Soul Kitchen, neighbors from across the street or across town, new friends, families, those in need of help and those with help to offer, come together and share a good meal and the warmth of good company.
Friendship is our daily special.
Introduce yourself to the person seated beside you or across the table. Stay awhile and stay informed of all the ways Soul Kitchen is dedicated to eliminating hunger, building relationships, and celebrating community.
End the meal with a slice of happiness.
At Soul Kitchen the main ingredient is Love, with a large helping of you. Our chefs prepare our healthy, delicious meals with the freshest ingredients, some grown in our own organic garden. At the JBJ Soul Kitchen all are treated with cheerfulness, kindness, and respect.

FAQ

What is the JBJ Soul Kitchen?
The Soul Kitchen is a Community Restaurant, a non-profit community program run by the Jon Bon Jovi Soul Foundation.

What is a community restaurant?
A Community Restaurant is a place where individuals or families can come to eat a hot, nutritious meal in a warm, welcoming setting and meet their neighbors.
Do I pay for my meal?
Times are tough and we understand. If you are unable to pay for your meal, you can volunteer at the Soul Kitchen as your payment.
What would I have to do?
You could come and prepare food for a meal. You could come and help us set the tables with dishes. Maybe along the way you were a waitress or waiter, you could help out at the restaurant by serving others. We need people to bus tables and help clean or stock items. We need people to wash and dry dishes. There are lots of opportunities to help.

SURPRISE – Our club presented the coveted Paul Harris Fellow to our pianist Teddie Caulfield, who has been with our club for decades.  She is loved by all, a FABULOUS pianist and person who being so gifted, doesn’t read music, who remembers the name and keys for, perhaps, thousands of songs (classical, popular, inspiration, patriotic and any other classification one can imagine) which she has serenaded us every week.  She is a breath of fresh air, a beautiful person and with a memory that all of us would wish we had. Congratulations to you, Teddie, and we wish and hope that you continue to play for us as you have.  Without you our club is not complete.  Teddie was surprised by her children, spouses, et al, who all attended to be part of this honor.

Speaker:  Adrian Pristas, MD spoke to us about Are You Getting A Good Night's Sleep
Specialties - Pulmonology, Critical Care Medicine, Sleep Medicine; Board Certifications -Pulmonology, Sleep Medicine; Affiliations - Bayshore Community Hospital & Riverview Medical Center; Education and Training; Medical School: Universedad Autonoma de Guadalajara; Internship: New York Medical College ; Residencies: Monmouth Medical Center; Fellowship: St. Luke's Roosevelt Hospital

Adrian is a wonderfully interesting, non-traditional speaker who captivated us for the entire talk.  He spoke about insomnia and sleep apnea.  He touched upon many areas of sleep deprivation, but specifically, I was able to capture the following points:
  1. Without sleep you would die; this compromises one’s immune system.
  2. People with sleep apnea get more heart attacks and other ailments.
  3. Doctors who lack sleep have a 15% chance of less productivity…and in a few days of this, could have 50% chance of committing errors on patients.
  4. Temperature in the room must drop to get a proper sleep.  Body needs this to maximize sleep.
  5. One who has sleep problems should see a doctor and get some type of sleep mask.  Often trial and error would establish the best one.
  6. Ambien is not a good drug for those who have insomnia. It has a 3-month tolerance.
  7. If you get up at night, try to sit in a chair with a dim light behind you and read. This will make you sleepy as opposed to bright (t.v., computer) light.\

2016 Two Rivers Food & Wine Tasting to Benefit Lunch Break
The Sixteenth Annual
Two Rivers Food and Wine Tasting
to benefit
Lunch Break
Monday, April 18th, 2016
Branches
123 Monmouth Road West Long Branch
6:00-9:00PM

In January 1983, thirty five people gathered at the Friends Meeting House in Shrewsbury to discuss the issue of hunger in Monmouth County. They committed themselves to help the community members who find it difficult to provide the bare necessities for their families.

Galvanized into action, the group (in which churches and businesses were represented) began to raise funds and recruit volunteers.

In March 1983, Reverend Terence Rosheuvel provided the basement of the Saint Thomas Episcopal Church in Red Bank to serve hot lunches. In 1985, Lunch Break moved to the Masonic Temple on Bergen Place and expanded its services to include the provision of groceries to families.

Community demand quickly increased beyond the capacity of the Temple, and Lunch Break leaders began to investigate the construction of a permanent, independent facility. In 1986, through combined efforts of many contributors and a large grant from the State of New Jersey, Lunch Break opened the doors to its current facility at 121 Drs. James Parker Boulevard in Red Bank.

In 1992 Saint Leo’s started supplying bagged lunches on Saturday to be distributed to our clients.

For 25 years Mrs. Norma Todd was the Executive Director and the heart and soul of Lunch Break. Mrs. Todd passed away in April 2008 leaving a legacy of love and determination as her banner. Shortly thereafter, Gwendolyn Love was hired as our new Executive Director. Along with her staff, Lunch Break annually is helped by over 1,500 volunteers, with approximately 70 volunteers serving in several capacities on a regular basis.

We continue to serve our community members in need to this day, with the same passion, dedication and community support which is the foundation established by Mrs. Todd years ago.

In recent years, several programs have been added to the Lunch Break roster of services such as the children's Cooking Class Program and the Saturday breakfast, which is sponsored by several area churches.

Our vision is to lead the region as the comprehensive food, nutrition and life skills resource for community members in need.

Lunch Break freely provides life’s basic necessities – food, clothing and fellowship for our community members in need. Our mission is to alleviate hunger and lead those we serve to self-sufficiency and healthier lifestyles. We serve everyone, with compassion and dignity.
